Volunteer in Africa
Africa is one of the world's great natural wonders, with the beauty and richness of the landscapes matched by the warmth of its people. Each country is unique and has much to offer visitors, but there's equally much that visitors can in turn give back.
To volunteer in Africa could mean working closely with conservation projects and communities, experiencing the wildlife and forming relationships with local people for yourself.
Some suggestions of volunteer work overseas in Africa are below, but there are plenty more opportunities available to intrepid 'voluntourists'.
Big 5 Wildlife & Community - Get up close and personal and work as a volunteer with some of the world’s most magnificent animals. This diverse project gives you a real taste of South Africa. Some days you might be feeding elephants or caring for lions, other days you might be clearing bush or carrying out other vital conservation work. We guarantee two things: you won’t be bored, and you will encounter spectacular scenery.
Community Work with Children - Your days will be varied depending on what you’d like to get involved in, but the main need is for education. English is in high demand, so conversation, teaching or reading a book with the children is crucial and enjoyable. Your help is also needed with essential activities such as tidying, supervising homework, singing songs, cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and generally lending an enthusiastic hand. You’ll work at your project from Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. At weekends, your time is free to explore the local vibrant community, hit the beach or go on safari.
Great White Shark Monitoring - Ever seen Jaws? Well now is your chance to put your fears to rest as you observe these magnificent creatures from the safety of a marine boat, learning all there is to know from the experts. You will be working with Great White sharks monitoring their behaviour both from the boat and from cages! You will also be working with the Marine Big 5 – sharks, whales, dolphins, seals and penguins as well as working closely with the team’s Marine Biologist. You will be amazed at what you will learn!
