Introduction to Cairns
Being located near the north-eastern tip of Australia, Cairns is a hot and humid city ideal for Kiwis who hanker for a bit of heat with their holiday. Temperatures year-round are much warmer than New Zealand, so a visit here is guaranteed to feel like summer, whatever the time of year.
Because of this Cairns is a top place to go to get stuck into the great outdoors, whether lazing on beaches, cruising the reefs, trekking through rainforest or white knuckle-riding down rivers.
Of course, the city itself also has a style of its own, so shoppers and foodies will find plenty to keep them happy as well.
Cairns is also the gateway to the whole Tropical North Queensland region, making it an awesome place to go for either a short break or as the base for a longer adventure. Take a road in any direction and you’ll find tons of awesome Australian vistas and places to explore.
This truly is an outdoorsman’s paradise, so pack a sense of adventure and get ready to bring it on!
No visitor to Cairns could leave without taking a boat trip to the famous Great Barrier Reef. This amazing natural wonder stretches for more than 2300 kilometres off the coast. The multi-coloured coral is alive with all sorts of marine life, and apparently is also visible from space. Fortunately you won’t have to travel that far for a good view; plenty of boat tours operate out of Cairns.
Get outdoors. Seriously, there is so much to see and do in the region, and the climate is so warm and dry throughout the year, that you’d be crazy not to make the most of it.
Try your hand at white water rafting in Tully Gorge, explore some beautiful fauna and flora 135 million years in the making in Daintree Rainforest, or just kick back in the glorious sunshine at hip Trinity Beach.
The tropical holiday village of Port Douglas is a touch of glam about an hour north of Cairns. Sure it’s a bit upmarket, but there are also some cool beaches, boutique shops and stylish restaurants to make it worth a visit.
Even in the middle of winter the city is worth a visit, with the Cairns Festival parade and fireworks display held each year at the end of August.
