Introduction to Melbourne
Hip, lively and creative are what you’ll get as a visitor to Melbourne. Maybe it’s something in the air over there, but there’s always something going on in the city’s streets, bars and theatres. Foodies and music-lovers can check out all the various festivals and live events running through the year, or if you’re just looking for somewhere to spend a wild weekend there are bars and clubs aplenty.
Melbourne is a fun city to just wander around, exploring the shops and cafes down hidden streets. It’s also super easy to get around, with the famed tram running through the city centre and trains extending out to the suburbs.
The city is one of Australia’s creative hubs, so is the perfect place to go for some holiday inspiration, whether musical, literary or liquid.
Exploring the city streets you’re bound to stumble across one of the bustling food markets such as Queen Victoria Market, where you can grab some delicious food and drink for not much money, ideal for fuelling up before a shopping expedition or some sightseeing.
For some retail therapy, grab your credit card and hit the mix of boutique and high street shops. Then wander down for a flat white overlooking the river in one of the riverside cafes and restaurants. You can go “awww” looking at all the cute animals at Melbourne Zoo, or work on the tan in seaside spot St Kilda.
Plus there are a ton of true blue Aussie experiences just a hop, skip and jump away, from wildlife sanctuaries and national parks like Healesville to historic attractions like Sovereign Hill.
Time your visit right and you can take in one of the festivals like the Food & Wine Festival in March, Good Beer Week in May or Melbourne Cup Carnival in November.
